How Infrared thermometers work: Infrared thermometers measure the heat of the eardrum, which is the same as your hypothalamus, the temperature controller of the brain.
The design consists of an infrared reading tip, which converts the energy to an electrical signal that can be displayed in units of temperature after being compensated for ambient temperature variation. This type facilitates temperature measurement from a distance without contact with the object to be measured. As such, the infrared thermometer is useful for measuring temperature under circumstances where regular mercury or digtal thermometer be used or produce discomfort for a variety of reasons. Some typical circumstances are where the subject such as in a baby is sleeping, or sick and you do not want to transmit any germs or virus.
Infrared thermometers measure temperature using blackbody radiation (generally infrared) emitted from objects. They are sometimes callednon-contact thermometers to describe the device’s ability to measure temperature from a distance. By knowing the amount of infrared energy emitted by the object and its emissivity, the object's temperature can be determined.
IR thermometers capture the invisible infrared energy naturally emitted from all objects. Infrared radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum which includes radio waves, microwaves, visible light, ultraviolet, gamma, and X-rays.
